Growing our Faith Through Service to Others

Apr 28, 2025 | Good News, Holy Family Catholic School Division

During the late winter and early spring season at St. Michael School in Weyburn, many acts of service are easily observed. These acts might be the grade nine students hosting a variety of fundraisers, the grade six students gathering donations of food for the local Food Bank, or our students busy cleaning the school grounds in celebration of Earth Day. Whatever the activity, students and staff find joy in doing something for the good of their school community.

Each year, the grade nine students have the opportunity to participate in a school field trip to ski at a nearby resort. Participation includes raising the funds needed to travel and ski! Rather than paying out of pocket, the students make plans and host opportunities for the school community to enjoy while making the money needed. Valentine’s and Easter basket raffles, baking sales and weekly canteens are just a few of the activities experienced.

During the Lenten season, as an expectation of Religious studies as well as faith growth, the grade six classes take on the challenge of advertising for and collecting food bank donations. They do a tremendous job of promoting the ‘why’ and encouraging all to contribute.

The winter season, as any Saskatchewan-er knows, can be a little rough on the lawns and yards in each community. Debris floats in on the wind and branches or weeds deadened by the winter chill litter the area. A small group of students working together with an adult team of learning facilitators and support staff take the very first sunny, warm day to brighten the yard up by collecting these items. Their spirit shines strong as they give the area a ‘polish’ for all to enjoy!

Our school system demonstrates our theme, Rooted in Christ, Serving in Love, best when we showcase the efforts of our students and staff!
