Story Eight – Regina Catholic Schools

Dec 9, 2024 | Good News, Regina Catholic School Division

In December of 1899 negotiations with Major Montgomery were initiated for the purchase at $150.00 each, of lots 12, 13, and 14 in block 307 on Cornwall Street. This would soon be the site of Gratton School.

Then in March, 1900, plans were drawn up for the erection on the same site of a school costing $2,500.00. This first Catholic school in Regina, a four-room brick veneer building situated next to the first St. Mary’s Church, was formally opened on Monday, October 29th, 1900, by the Apostolic Delegate, Most Rev. Falconio.

While the school itself no longer exists, and the name Gratton School District is long gone, we still honour our Gratton history. The Catholic Education Centre previously attached to Holy Rosary School had a large meeting room known as the Gratton Room. We’ve held onto that name at our new Catholic Education Centre near the airport. The new Gratton Room is connected to the Board Room by a moveable wall. The two rooms combined can comfortably hold meetings for more than 100 people.
