From Teacher to Priest by Fr. Harry

Sep 26, 2024 | Good News, Prince Albert Catholic School Division

We often rejoice when we hear about a student aspiring to join the clergy or religious life, but what about a staff member? I would like to share my story with you, hoping it might inspire others to answer the call to religious or clergy life.

My name is Fr. Harry, and I was ordained a priest on August 6th, 2024. Before my ordination, I worked as a teacher at École St. Mary High School (50%) and as the Religious Coordinator for the Prince Albert Catholic School Division (50%). My initial life plan was to work for 32 years, then retire to a peaceful life of coffee outings, relaxing at home, and tending to my garden. However, God had other plans for me. Even though it involved many changes, I took a leap of faith and am now incredibly blessed to serve as a priest.

Here is my story.

I first felt a calling to the priesthood when I was 18, but I only took small steps toward it. I would help out at church, but I wanted my vocation to be limited to Sundays. My career path was set to become a school administrator, and I served as either Vice-Principal or Principal for about 15 years. While administration was rewarding, I still felt there was something more God wanted me to do in serving Jesus.

My vocation truly shifted into high gear once I began teaching in a Catholic school. I loved that we could pray, read scripture, and explore theological meanings in various contexts. I was eager to deepen my understanding of the faith, and the Prince Albert Catholic School Division gave me the opportunities to grow spiritually. Their encouragement and support were pivotal in my journey to the priesthood.

I took time off to study at seminary, completing my theology degree through online courses and summer classes. I had the chance to study in Edmonton, Toronto, and Ottawa. In 2010, I was ordained a deacon and returned to serve as the Religious Coordinator for the Prince Albert Catholic School Division. I assisted teachers with their religion classes and faith formation while also teaching Catholic Studies to grade 10-12 students.

As I neared retirement from teaching, my desire to serve more in parishes grew. I faced a significant decision and vividly remember the prayer I offered about ordination: “If You call me, I will say yes, and I trust You, Jesus.” That prayer had a profound impact, and soon everything began to fall into place for my ordination. On August 6th, I was ordained as a priest by Bishop Michael Smolinski of the Eparchy of Saskatoon.

Now, with only a year left before my retirement from teaching, I continue to work half-time as the Religious Coordinator and half-time as a parish priest. This schedule keeps me busy, but I rely on God’s grace to sustain me. If you are considering a vocation to religious or clergy life, my advice is to pray and speak with your bishop. By opening your heart to His call, you will experience God’s abundant grace. Is Jesus calling you? Will you answer His call?

Thank you for taking the time to read my vocational story. I pray that many more will step up to serve God as clergy, religious, or even being more involved in your parish.
