Students at various Lloydminster public and Catholic school divisions are set to dive into Truth and Reconciliation Week awareness activities.
The aim of the week (Sept. 26-30) is to learn and commemorate the truth of Canada’s history from First Nations, Métis, and Inuit knowledge keepers leading up to Orange Shirt Day on Sept. 30.
The federal government declared that date a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
All schools in the Lloydminster Public School Division (LPSD) will be doing a moment of silence at 2:15 p.m. on Orange Shirt Day in remembrance of all the Indigenous Children who attended residential schools.
This includes the 215 whose remains were discovered in Kamloops in May 2021.
Schools will do a walk to remember those who did not make it home, dressed in orange Winston Churchill School will host a walk dressed in orange to remember those who did not make it home.
There will also be a special Orange Shirt Day Barons football home game at Lloydminster Comprehensive High School.

The Lloydminster Catholic School Division (LCSD) is focusing Truth and Reconciliation awareness with the presentation of an eagle staff in an Orange Shirt Day at Holy Rosary High School.
The agenda includes a smudge and pipe ceremony followed by the eagle staff ceremony in the school’s gym that will be live streamed to share with all LCSD students and staff.
There will be a video presentation highlighting the work being done in LCSD to advance Truth and Reconciliation.
The event will wrap up with a traditional song, drumming and dancing and a media event.
